Keynote: Accelerating Research in the New Normal
In an academic research institute, many biomedical investigators in oncology and other areas are encouraged to initiate a lot of early phase trials early in their careers as part of developing their research portfolio. These investigator-initiated trials (IITs) are typically funded by their institution through internal funds or partially funded by pharmaceutical companies. As financial, administrative, and practical considerations play an essential role in the successful completion of IITs, efficient resource allocation is imperative to plan, design, and execute these studies within the allotted time. The University of Kansas Medical Center has developed a standard operational process to integrate both the study and biostatistics teams to optimize the technology for their specific IIT operational characteristic. Every IIT encompasses the following steps — feasibility analysis, clinical trial design, participant recruitment accrual monitoring, data management, interim analysis support, and final analysis, reporting, and manuscript writing. Early results of these initiatives look promising, and the Biostatistics and Informatics team intends to continue fostering innovative methodologies to enhance cancer research by improving the efficiency of IITs further.

Using Velos eResearch to Capture More Research Dollars
Institutions without a solid central accounts receivable (A/R) plan that includes identifying the A/R’s, mandating policy around them, and establishing enforcement around the policy, are leaving money on the table. Attrition at department and study levels is common and widespread, and monies owed go unclaimed. Mr. Manfrediz will share how taking a simple approach will boost your research revenue stream by increasing the chance of successfully implementing a winning strategy and plan.

The New Urgency of Change in Clinical Research
In the current COVID-19 landscape, institutions are implementing more robust processes to ensure clinical trials are best aligned with their strategy. The clinical trials landscape has changed, which may affect the institutional strategy plans to include clinical trials. What does the industry portfolio look like today as compared to pre-pandemic? What changes are institutions making now to help ensure financial sustainability? We will share industry insights of our current landscape, urgent changes being considered at institutions, and present case studies of how WCG is partnering with institutions to bridge the path to change.
Using Collaborative Data To improve Care for the Smallest Babies
The Children's Hospitals Neonatal Consortium collects data on all neonatal intensive care patients from 36 regional children's hospitals in the United States and Canada, using a WCG Velos database to help hospitals leverage this combined dataset to make improvements. In this session we will share ways in which CHNC and our membership access and analyze the data, and discuss how this data is used to directly improve care, both within each participating hospital and across the consortium, using disease and intervention specific collaborative focus groups and consortium wide quality improvement initiatives.
