Study Summary

I am studying Alzheimer's disease as my science project in high school and how artificial intelligence, specifically natural language processing (NLP), can help to detect and diagnose the disease earlier. The purpose of my study is to collect data from de-identified participants with different ranges of cognitive ability (from cognitively healthy to Alzheimer's disease) and then create a natural language processing model that can differentiate healthy individuals from those with Alzheimer's disease. The goal is to have the natural language processing model look into language impairments and discrepancies in speech patterns in order to detect Alzheimer's disease earlier.

Study Description

I will be collecting data utilizing an app that was created for this purpose by my mentor, Dr. Guillermo Cecchi at Thomas J. Watson IBM Research Center. The app has an initial screen that gives detail about my study and informed consent. Then, the next page has three prompts that participants would have to record their answers to. The first prompt is "what is your favorite memory from the past week or month?", the second prompt is to describe an image (Cookie Theft image), and the third prompt is "name as many fruits as you can in one minute." There is a start and stop recording feature for each of the three prompts and the data will be uploaded as audio WAV files. The time needed to complete these tasks should be around 10-15 minutes at most. I will be explaining this in detail to the consenting participant and/or to family members or designated caregiver. There will be no other medical information that would be needed.
