Central Kentucky Research Associates, LLC is a multispecialty clinical research site in Lexington, Kentucky. The ability to recruit evaluable patients rapidly and produce high-quality study results in a timely manner has earned Central Kentucky Research Associates, Inc. (CKRA) a sterling reputation as one of the nation’s leading, independent clinical drug research facilities. This is affirmed by the fact that the company, which ranks in the top 10 percent of the nation’s clinical trial sites in subject evaluability, has conducted trials (Phases1 through IV) for every major drug company in the U.S. and many in Europe and Japan.

Central Kentucky Research Associates makes it possible for people to participate in clinical trials that can change the face of medicine. Founded in 1991 by Deborah Dyer, RN, BSN and the late Jacqueline Smith, RN, BSN, CCRC, CKRA was Kentucky’s first independent clinical drug research facility. CKRA is also one of the few such facilities in the nation that is owned and operated by women who are not physicians.

Central Kentucky Research Associates is located in a 17,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility that is conveniently accessible to hospitals, a regional airport, I-75, I-64, and lodging accommodations.

CKRA operates as an outpatient facility with access to in patient care. Our facility offers the following amenities:

Additionally, Central Kentucky Research has a 20-bed Phase 1 unit that encompasses 6,000 square feet and is adjacent to the Phase II-IV research center. CKRA’s Phase 1 Unit is dedicated to completing healthy volunteer and special population early phase trials. Each subject room is equipped with a private bath, recliner and flat screen cable DVD/TV. Most subject rooms are handicapped accessible. The unit also includes an entertainment lounge offering cable TV, Wi-Fi, DVD and book libraries and game tables to ensure the comfort of volunteers. Our research unit is also equipped with dedicated smoking rooms, each with SmokeMaster air filtration systems. These totally self-contained carbon-filtered air cleaners filter smoke and many other irritants with up to 99.8% efficiency. Each smoking room also has an Odor-Free Ozone Generator which will oxidize unwanted odors in the room without the use of chemicals or masking deodorizers. Room doors are sealed and have large windows. The doors have optional curtains for patient observation or privacy.

Mark S. Adams, MD
Principal Investigator- Internal Medicine
Dr. Adams is board certified in Internal Medicine and has participated in academic and Phase I-IV clinical research since 1980. He joined Central Kentucky Research Associates in July 2015. His clinical trial experience includes research in the areas of cardiology, metabolic disorders, endocrinology, neurology, musculoskeletal, infectious disease, smoking, and vaccine trials. He is a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, GA, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Louisville Medical School. Dr. Adams has worked as a physician for the Lexington Clinic, as well as Cumberland Medical Associates in London, KY and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington, KY, and served as medical consultant for the Kentucky National Guard.

James L. Borders, MD, FACP
Principal Investigator – Internal Medicine
Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Borders has served as an investigator for CKRA since 2005. Dr. Borders had been in private practice for over 30 years and has extensive trial experience in dermatology, urology, immunology, rheumatology, smoking, vaccines, biodefense, and numerous other categories.

Henry Wells, MD
Investigator – Plastic Surgery
Dr. Wells has held leadership positions in the Fayette County Medical Society and the University of Kentucky Medical School Alumni Association. Additionally, he has been on the board of the Susan Komen Foundation of Lexington, the Rolex-Kentucky Three-Day Event, and is Past President of the Kentucky Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Wells completed his plastic surgery training at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1984 where he was an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery. He returned to Kentucky in 1988 to enter private practice.

CKRA has access to a large patient population. According to the 2016 U.S. Census Estimate, the population of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area is 506,571. Lexington demographics alone consist of: Population: 260,512. Median age: 33.9. Per capita personal income: $29,168. Male population: 48%. Female population 52%. White 77%. African-American 13.5%. Other 9.5%. From the standpoint of age, 21.2% are 0-17 years old, 13.8% are 18-24, 34.1% are 25-44, 20.5% are 45-64, and 10.4% are 65+. These demographics help to contribute to the success of multispecialty research. In addition, we have enrolled patients from the whole state of Kentucky. We are conveniently located near several major universities and regularly recruit through advertising mediums such as TV, radio, newspaper, and newsletter.

CKRA also has a patient database that consists of over 31,000patients that continually participate in clinical trials.
