Center Overview:

Since 2001 Middlemore Clinical Trials (MMCT) has administered clinical trials and major grant-funded research studies on behalf of the large tertiary New Zealand based hospital, Middlemore Hospital.

Founded in 1947, Middlemore Hospital is the second largest hospital in the city of Auckland, with 850 inpatient beds and around 5,000 staff. It provides treatment to more than 100,000 inpatients and over 450,000 outpatients per year. It is the National Burns Unit for New Zealand and the Regional Plastic Surgery Unit. Like any advanced tertiary hospital, it has highly qualified surgical and medical staff covering most disciplines supported by a comprehensive allied health team

Research experience:

Over the past 17 years MMCT has performed hundreds of trials from Phase I- Phase IV across most therapeutic areas. We have 41 medical specialists acting as Principal investigators and cover both acute and chronic conditions.

We have worked with most of the large biotech and pharm companies. This year we have worked with 30 different sponsors

Facility description:

Housed within a large hospital MMCT provides both inpatient and outpatient facilities for clinical research. We have on site pharmacy and laboratory processing and the associated equipment necessary to run complex clinical trials

Investigator experience:

All our investigators are GCP trained and are specialists in their respective therapeutic area. As well as being keen researchers they are often leaders in New Zealand in their field

Staff expertise:

We have over 28 research nurses onsite who are assisted by a phlebotomist, pharmacist and regulatory specialist.

Patient demographics:

South Auckland, where Middlemore Hospital is situated, has a population of over 625,000. This diverse and vibrant community is socio-economically disadvantaged and is overrepresented in many chronic disease states such as diabetes and heart disease. Many Maori and Pacific Island families live there as well as a significant Asian population.

Other information:

Centralized ethics (IRB) in New Zealand means that most protocol submissions are reviewed and approved within 4-6 weeks. We also have a regulatory specialist to aid the process.

We work with primary care organizations in our community meaning we have access to databases containing over 250,000 patients

All feasibility questionnaires should be sent to feasibility@mmclintrials.nz
