The Canadian Sleep Institute (CSI) is a community-based clinical and research facility which opened in Calgary in November 1995.
The mandate of the institute is to develop as a centre of excellence in clinical care, diagnostic services, education, and research, with primary focus on sleep, fatigue, and psychiatric disorders. The design and development of the CSI to date has been with the goal of becoming a major strategic partner with industry in conduction of pharmaceutical trials, with focus on CNS projects.
CSI's key research interests include the following therapeutic areas:
Sleep & Alertness and Other Conditions:
We have successfully completed research with the following sponsors: Pfizer, Wyeth-Ayerst, Draxis, SmithKline Beecham, and Neuroscience Pharma.
We have also worked with the following CROs: CROMedica, Integrated Research, and Quintiles Canada.
We occupy a 10,000 square foot facility, ideally designed for the functioning of a multi-disciplinary clinical and research team. The facility includes a four bedroom sleep and chronobiological laboratory, capable of conducting the full spectrum of neurological sleep and alertness studies. We have recently completed accreditation by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and we are the first sleep facility in Canada to apply for the ASDA accreditation as an international centre of excellence.
The founder and medical director of the institute is Dr. Adam Moscovitch, one of the leading sleep experts in Canada. After completing his psychiatric training, Dr. Moscovitch served as a visiting scholar and NIH research fellow for two years at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic and Research Center. Since his return to Canada, he has been a leading investigator in the overlap between sleep and psychiatry, and one of the key opinion makers in this area in this country. He is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Sleep Medicine, Psychiatry and Neurology, and presently Vice President of the Canadian Sleep Society.
We have an impressive group of highly qualified consultants, with extensive clinical and research experience in their respective fields. Our affiliated specialists include psychiatrists, psychologists, internists, a pulmonologist, a pharmacist, and family physicians. The group includes three M.D./Ph.D.s, including a Ph.D. in Pharmacology, and a Ph.D. in Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
We have a large, established referral network with access to a large population base. The range of expertise available in the clinic, and our supportive infrastructure, helped establish a track record of top quality and timely delivery of services, with recruitment in projects far exceeding our initial allocation.
