Thomas J. Stephens & Associates, Inc. is a full service contract research organization which supports pharmaceutical, medical device, cosmetic and personal care companies worldwide.
Stephens has been providing clients with clinical testing and clinical services since 1989, and conducts more than 250 clinical trials per year in a variety of therapeutic areas, with an emphasis in Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Nutrition.
We are headquartered in Richardson, Texas and have research facilities in Richardson, Texas and Phoenix, AZ, and partnerships with research facilities in Tokyo, Japan, Seoul, South Korea and Bangalore, India.

Thomas J. Stephens, PhD, President
Founder and President of Stephens & Associates, Inc., Dr. Stephens has a Ph.D. in immunobiology from Iowa State University and an M.S.in Bioscience from Southern IllinoisUniversity. Dr. Stephens has been a study investigator for more than 25 years. Prior to starting Stephens & Associates, Inc., he was Director of Product Safety and Claims Substantiation Worldwide for Mary Kay Cosmetics and a Divisional Toxicologist at The Procter & Gamble Company. He has published more than 80 scientific articles, technical posters, and book chapters in medicine and science.
Dr. Stephens served on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Toxicology - Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology, and is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. In 2000, he was elected to the "Leaders Society" of the Dermatology Foundation. Dr. Stephens' office is located at the Texas Research Center.
Lily Jiang, PhD, Vice President of Clinical Operations
Dr. Jiang has a PhD in biology from California Institute of Technology. She has over ten years of research experience studying cell signaling transduction in the areas of immunology and cancer biology. Prior to joining Stephens & Associates, Dr. Jiang served as a faculty member at the Department of Pharmacology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Her work has been awarded several NIH grants. She has published numerous research papers in peer reviewed journals and presented her work at national and international conferences.
Dr. Jiang also worked at Alliance for Cellular Signaling organization managing projects focused on mathematical modeling of signaling network and at Athersys Inc. leading several drug discovery projects, which resulted in two US patents. Dr. Jiang's responsibilities include overseeing the Investigators, serving as a study Investigator on clinical trials, working with clients on clinical trial design and overseeing the development of technologies for evaluating treatment related changes in skin.
Mark T. Stephens, MD, Investigator
Dr. Mark Stephens serves as an Investigator for Stephens Ophthalmology clinical trials and practices medicine at Dallas Eye Care. He specializes in cataract and refractive surgery using the most advanced techniques and technologies available to give patients a surgical alternative to glasses and contacts. He also specializes in glaucoma treatment using laser and microinvasive procedures. In addition, Dr. Stephens has experience with early detection and intervention of diabetic retinopathy and other diabetic eye diseases.
Dr. Stephens attended Southern Methodist University and received his medical training at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of Georgia, where he was named Chief Resident his final year. Dr. Stephens is licensed in the state of Texas and has privileges at Walnut Hill Surgery Center in Dallas. He’s a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, the Texas Medical Association and the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology.
Peter Hino, MD, Investigator and Independent Medical Monitor
Dr. Peter D. Hino earned his Medical Degree from the University of New Mexico and trained in Dermatology at the University of Oklahoma, where he served as chief resident in his final year of training.
Dr. Hino has served an Investigator for Stephens since 1994. He practices medicine at Dermatology Center of Dallas in 1989. He served as Chief of Dermatology for Texas Health Resources - Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas from 2004 - 2011. In addition to his busy practice, Dr. Hino teaches Internal Medicine residents at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, and students and residents from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at UTSW. Dr. Hino is also a consultant and clinical investigator for several pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies, where he focuses on innovative therapies for acne, skin care products, sun protection and antiviral compounds.
Dr. Hino has been voted one of D-Magazine's best doctors in Dallas from 2001-2014. He is a frequent speaker for community organizations, health interest groups, and for broadcast media. Dr. Hino's special clinical interests include teenage acne, cutaneous malignancies, and antiaging treatment - both products and procedures. Dr. Hino is trained in Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport™, Restalyne®, and Juvederm™.
