The CAMC Institute Clinical Trials Center is a centralizedclinical research center dedicated to research full-time, and isaffiliated with West Virginia University, providing superiorpatient care and clinical trial performance. The Center isexperienced in conducting Phase II-IV clinical trials evaluating amyriad of therapeutic areas. It gives area patients access toinvestigational drugs, innovative procedures, and new therapies,reducing their need to travel outside West Virginia for care. Somehighlights of the Center are:
The CAMC Institute is a CAMC, Inc., subsidiary, which includeshospitals, primary care facilities, subspecialty practices, auniversity affiliation, a children’s hospital, and nursing homes.We can provide virtually any patient population in a variety ofsettings. Because of our affiliation with Charleston Area MedicalCenter, we have access to over 550 physicians and surgeons.
About 80% of the Center’s studies come from industry orcooperative groups, including the National Cancer Institute’snetwork affiliates. The remaining 20% are generated by localinvestigators. The Center is involved in many national, multicenterstudies.
The CAMC Institute Clinical Trials Center provides a focusedmechanism for evaluating new drugs and drug uses, new medicaldevices, and quality of life aspects associated with the use ofthese products. These studies are conducted within our ownfacilities as well as at hospitals, clinics, and physicians’offices. The Institute plays an essential role in encouraging andsupporting quality research in a controlled medical setting.
The CAMC Institute Clinical Trials Center is an obvious choicefor today’s researcher. Our current involvement includes clinicaltrials of drugs and devices, prevention programs, outcomes/qualityimprovement, and quality of life studies. We conduct bothindustry-sponsored and federally funded clinical trials. Theseprojects have been implemented in a variety of therapeutic areasincluding cardiology, oncology, infectious diseases,endocrinology/metabolism, gynecology, surgery, and devicedevelopment.
The Center also offers centralized management for clinicaltrials, providing a single point of contact to sponsors andcontract research organizations. In addition, a centralizedinstitutional research and grants review office is available forprompt human subject and contract review.
West Virginia statistics indicate that the state’s rates ofheart disease and stroke mortality have been higher than thenational average for the past three decades, and the gap betweenthe state and nation continues to widen. Helping CAMC, Inc., reducethese dismal statistics is central to the Clinical Trials Center’smission. Recent efforts aimed at reducing cardiovascular morbidityand mortality have attracted studies on reducing restenosis ratesafter angioplasty and treating patients with unstable angina andMI.
We are interested in conducting research that will benefit thepeople of West Virginia. The application of what we learn fromresearch is vital to the improvement of the health, quality ofservice, and patient care throughout West Virginia. CAMC Institute’s Clinical Trials Center has established areputation for conducting clinical trials efficiently andeffectively. Our investigators are experienced with clinical trialsand have a broad range of specialties. We also have experiencedcertified clinical research coordinators, research nursecoordinators, research assistants, and support staff.Biostatistical assistance and study analysis is available throughthe CAMC Institute, as well as research assistance for preparationof institutional review board and other regulatory documentation.We are also very experienced in budget preparation and studyimplementation.
Our patient referral base and our continually expandingcomputerized database assure rapid patient screening andenrollment. Our affiliations with hospitals, clinics, managed care,extended care facilities and private physicians help to provide anaggressive, cost-efficient approach to patient recruitment.
All studies are conducted by trained coordinators andinvestigators according to rigorous quality standards.

The CAMC Institute Clinical Trials Center, with its affiliationto Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), West Virginia’s largesthealth care provider, and West Virginia University, is an obviouschoice for today’s researcher. CAMC is fully accredited by JointCommission for the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations(JCAHO). In addition, the medical center is affiliated with manyother hospitals and health care facilities throughout the state andserves southern West Virginia’s population of more than 500,000.Demographically, the population is broadly distributed among allage, education, and income groups. We have the capabilities ofconducting outpatient studies within the CAMC Institute ClinicalTrials Center. The center is equipped with full service exam roomsand laboratory, an EKG machine, locked storage for investigationaldrugs and devices, refrigerator for temporary storage of drugand/or specimens, and secure storage for CRFs. In addition, we areable to conduct inpatient studies at Charleston Area MedicalCenter. CAMC is a 900-bed full service hospital with a dedicatedInvestigational Drug Pharmacist. Geographically, we are fiveminutes from Yeager Airport, and 2-4 hours from several majorcities, including Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Cincinnati.
Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) serves Southern WestVirginia’s population of more than 500,000. Demographically, thepopulation is broadly distributed among all age, educational, andincome groups. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, West Virginia’spopulation has the highest median age (37.7) in the nation, andranks fourth in the United States in the proportion of itspopulation that is elderly (65+). In addition, women compose alarger percentage of the population in West Virginia than in thenation as a whole (53.1%).
