Summary

Parkinson's affects speech, so many people find that their speech devices stop working after they get Parkinson's. We intend to make such problems a thing of the past. The Speech Accessibility Project online (SAP online) is aimed at better automatic speech recognition for people with Parkinson's Disease or who otherwise experience difficulty with speech.  The goal is that you will be able to easily access smart speakers, cell phones, voice menus, and all the other types of information provided via speech. SAP online is currently collecting speech samples from people with Parkinson's, Multiple Systems Atrophy, Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Post-DBS, or other Parkinsonisms. Once enrolled in the study, you will record your speech by reading simple sentences and responding to questions.

Many schools and companies are interested in solving this problem, but in order to do so, they need your speech.  The Speech Accessibility Project will provide your speech as a community resource to companies and schools with good ideas for accessible technology.  Your contribution is essential for us to make these significant advances.

This study is fully remote and based in the United StatesSAP online is sponsored by Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft.  Visit speechaccessibilityproject.beckman.illinois.edu to learn more.

Description

To participate in the study, you will need an email address, and a computer with internet access.  You will use our web-based recording tool to record your speech by reading 400 sentences. You will also respond to 50 questions about your daily life, hobbies, music and books. For every 150 recordings you complete, we will send you a $60 gift card.  If you complete all 450 recordings, you can earn up to $180.  If you have someone helping you, they can earn up to $90 for helping you to participate.

People interested in this study will sign up for a meeting with a Speech-Language Pathologist at LSVT Global. They will serve as your mentor to help you get started. They will discuss the study with you, then show you how to use the web-based recording tool to record your speech.  After your first mentor meeting, you can login to the system to record speech at any time of day, 24/7.

SAP online has been designed to capture your data securely online, over the internet.  This study is expected to be completed fairly quickly.  We expect that most people will be able to record their responses to all 450 prompts in one to five recording sessions, but you can go at your own pace.

The collected speech samples will be stored securely in a custom database built by the UIUC Beckman Institute and will not include your name or other personal, identifying information.

The entire database of speech samples will then be shared with any company or school who proposes a strategy that is likely to make automatic speech recognition more accessible to people with Parkinson's. This includes our five coalition partners, Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft. Each of our coalition partners has signed a data use agreement with UIUC that assures the privacy of participants and confidentiality of data.
