Summary

The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between cognitive skills (i.e., executive functions), and make comparisons to verb processing and decision making for individuals with Alzheimer Disease as compared to healthy adults.

Description

This project will assess the relationship between executive functioning and linguistic processing of verbs in adults with Alzheimer Disease (AD) and make comparisons with a group of healthy adults. A demographic questionnaire, a cognitive screening (MOCA; Nasreddine, 1996), and a hearing screening will be administered prior to the assessment. The NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery in Adults (NIHTB-CB; Carlozzi et al., 2014) will be implemented to assess overall executive functioning skills. In addition, a passive eye-tracking experiment will be conducted to examine the visual attention of verbs. The results of the eye-tracking experiment will be compared to determine the relationship between verb processing and executive functioning on patients with AD and healthy elderly adults. More research is needed to explore verbs from a linguistic processing point-of-view and these findings can lead to more information on lexical organization of verbs and the role that they play in sentences (Kim & Thompson, 2004). Furthermore, this project will examine how healthy and AD individuals approach different decision-making tasks. There is evidence that cognitive and emotional deficits affect inhibition and impulsive decisions (see Rochat et al., 2008). Here, we will measure impulsivity with both self-report scales (e.g., UPPS) and objective tasks and examine how these scores affect classic decision-making outcomes that pit rewards against time. Specifically, both healthy individuals and individuals with AD will complete a go/no go computer task and a Stroop task (a measure of inhibition). Next, they will complete the following decision-making tasks:
