Summary

This mixed-methods study characterizes the caregiving experiences of racial/ethnically diverse SGM caregivers of individuals living with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD), and identifies socioenvironmental, risk, and protective factors associated with their health.

Description

We will conduct 25 one-time in-depth interviews to explore the lived experiences of racial/ethnically diverse SGM ADRD caregivers. Interviews will take about two hours, and participants will be compensated $50 for completing the interviews. Prioritizing cultural humility, the interviews will be conducted by a bilingual interviewer who speaks both English and Spanish and identifies as SGM. The 2-hour interview window should provide sufficient time for participants to share a detailed life history and build trust/rapport prior to asking more sensitive questions. In an effort to minimize participant burden, we will conduct interviews via Zoom/telephone to accommodate barriers and challenges (e.g., transportation, time away from care recipient) commonly experienced by ADRD caregivers. Interviews will focus on Socioenvironmental Factors, Risk and Protective Factors, and Health and Well-being. Participants will be asked about their experiences with caregiving; their access and use of social resources; racial/ethnic identity, their SGM identity; and their health and healthcare utilization.
