Summary

This pilot study will be investigating the feasibility of developing an AI solution to assess and monitor the progression of mild Alzheimer's dementia through automated speech and dialogue analysis. Using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test, participants would be evaluated bi-monthly from August 2022 to April 2023 through in person sessions and will receive financial compensation for their time. The results of the study could provide important insights into the feasibility of developing future AI technologies to improve care quality.

Description

The study will take place over the course of August 2022 through October 2023 where participants would meet with a member of the research team bi-monthly to administer the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test, an early assessment tool for mild cognitive impairments (MCIs) and Alzheimer’s disease. During each study session, participants would complete the MoCA test. During each study session, the speech of each participant will be recorded. There would be bi-monthly sessions with each participant at two primary study site locations with a third alternative location if the prior two are not available: (1) at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in a user study lab, (2) in a quiet room in the participant’s home within 30 miles of UMBC or Montgomery County, and (3) in a private room in a public space (ex: a reserved quiet room in a local library). These session dates would be discussed with the potential participant to accommodate their lifestyle and their current living situation. Potential participants are recruited from the Baltimore and Washington DC metropolitan area sites ranging from senior homes to memory clinics, social media, and more. Each participant will receive financial compensation via gift cards throughout the study. Participants would receive $30 dollars for their time and effort plus $10 for parking if they drive to UMBC. Participants would receive an additional $10 if another driver is needed to go to UMBC (compensation will be received for each session)
