Summary

You may be eligible to participate in a research study evaluating the effects of a new in-home
technology system for caregivers of people with dementia or mild cognitive impairment. The
study is being conducted by Dr. Robert Levenson (University of California, Berkeley,
Department of Psychology) and Gene Wang (People Power Company of Care Daily).

Description

The study evaluates a new in-home technology product and is funded by a grant from the
National Institute on Aging. We are recruiting caregivers who are providing in-home care for a
partner or family member with dementia or mild cognitive impairment. The system is designed
to apply monitoring and internet-based technologies to reduce the stress, worries, burden, and
loneliness that often accompany caregiving. It is comprised of a smartphone app that provides
alerts to caregivers of worrisome behaviors and activities (e.g., unexpected exit/entry patterns,
potential falls, water leaks) and encourages contact and communication with friends and other
family members. There are no cameras or audio recording devices.

What will happen? If you choose to participate the research project will be conducted in your
home. You will receive our in-home technology system, which includes sensors (e.g., for
detecting door openings, falls, water leaks) and other devices (e.g., to connect to the internet)
with telephone assistance from our technical support team to help you with installing the
system. The system does not record video or audio.
After the installation is completed, you will be randomly assigned to one of two conditions. In
one condition all of the sensors and alerts will be activated. In the other condition just the
water leak detection and alerts will be activated. In both conditions you will be asked to
complete a set of questionnaires (approximately ninety minutes in length) before the
installation, after 3 months, and after 6 months. You will be compensated up to $150. Partial
payment will be provided if you only complete part of the study.
