Summary

This study is looking at the effects of pet dogs on stress in older adults and their in-home family caregivers. Participation includes a one-time, approximately two-hour session completed at home where participants (older adults and their caregivers) will fill out surveys on their stress level and quality of life. We will ask participants to provide a saliva and/or hair sample that will be used to look at hormonal levels of stress. Participants who have a dog in the home will also be asked to provide a saliva and hair sample from their dog.

Description

This study seeks to investigate the effects that pet dogs can have on stress and wellbeing of older adults and their family caregivers. We are recruiting older adults (age 65+) who has someone in the home that helps care for them (such as a spouse or adult child). This study involves a one-time participation where both individuals (i.e., the older adult and the caregiver) will fill out surveys about their stress levels and quality of life. We are also recruiting those who fit the same description and have a dog living in the home with them. We will ask all participants, including the dog if applicable, to provide a saliva and/or hair sample that we will use to look at hormonal stress levels. All parts of the study will be completed from the comfort of your own home. The saliva and hair collection materials will be delivered to and picked up from your home.
