Online studies

F.Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd (“Roche”) has developed a set of tests for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. The tests are completed using a smartphone application (app) and assess a person's motor behavior including movement of their hands, balancing, walking and turning around. The purpose of this study is to learn about experiences of individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and how this relates to the physical activities done with the smartphone app. In-depth interviews will be conducted with individuals living with Parkinson’s disease to understand the symptoms and functional limitations they experience and to assess the relevance of specific smartphone tests to these limitations. Forty-five individuals living with Parkinson's disease in the UK and the US will participate in this study.

What Will I Be Asked to Do?
If you are interested in taking part in this study, you will first be contacted by phone and asked some background questions to see if this study is the right one for you.
We are inviting you to take part in 2 interviews which will both be conducted via video call: the first interview will last around 50 minutes, and the second interview will last around 2 hours 20 minutes. Both interviews will be conducted by 2 interviewers at a time that is convenient to you. Before the interviews, you will receive a smartphone with a pre-installed app and a smartwatch. During the first interview you will be asked to describe your experiences with Parkinson’s disease, specifically your diagnosis, current symptoms, and any limitations caused by Parkinson’s disease. You will also be asked to provide your feedback on wearing the smartwatch and the smartphone device in a belt. The second interview involves interactions with the smartphone app. During the second interview, you will first be shown how it works and given some time to familiarize yourself with it. Following this, you will be asked to complete a set of movement tests via the app and will be asked some questions at the end of each test. After the second interview, we kindly ask you to return the material (including smartphone) back via pre-paid return post.
