Summary

This study aims to compare the psychological effects of caregiving on Chinese American and non-Chinese American dementia caregivers. It involves a brief survey assessing experiences of grief, coping, and stigma.

Description

The responsibility of caring for a dementia patient can have adverse effects on the family caregiver’s psychological well-being as well as the quality of care that the patient receives. While the experiences of White caregivers from Western cultures have been well studied, there has been a lack of research on other culturally diverse groups. Specifically, research on Chinese American immigrant dementia caregivers is very sparse, which is concerning considering that Asian Americans are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States. In order to effectively address the impact of caregiving on Chinese Americans, it is necessary to have a complete and comprehensive understanding of their experiences with it first. Thus, this study will examine and compare the psychological effects of family caregiving on Chinese American dementia caregivers to non-Chinese American dementia caregivers. The study aims to survey, either online, over the phone, or in person, Chinese American dementia caregivers, and non-Chinese American dementia caregivers for comparison. The survey will assess cultural and ethnic variations in attitudes and experiences with caregiving, including the participant’s experiences of grief, coping mechanisms, and perceptions of stigma.
