Summary

This study is looking for people over the age of 65 who have either early stage Alzheimer’s/mild cognitive impairment or depression. The study is interested in examining cognition and brain characteristics, and their relationship with Alzheimer’s and depression.

Description

Study schedule:
-The study activities will require 3-5 study appointments (approximately 6 hours of initial assessments will be spread out over 2 or 3 appointments.  12 months later you will complete approximately 5 hours of assessments that can be done in 1 or 2 appointments).  -During COVID-19, most study appointments can be done remotely.
-You will have a cognitive assessment.
-You will answer questions about your mood, memory, and thinking.
-You will have a brain scan (described below)..

Study activities may include: 
-Having a cognitive assessment and answering questions about your mood, memory, and thinking. This will be in the form of paper-and-pencil and computerized tests. 
-Having a brain scan (described below). 

Treatment or experiment details: 
-The brain scan is an MRI. For this, you will lie inside the scanning machine for about an hour while it takes a 3D image of your brain.
-There is no treatment being tested in this study. The study is interested in examining cognition and brain characteristics, and their relationship with Alzheimer’s and depression.

Inclusion Criteria

You could be eligible for this study if
You are between 65 and 85 years old
You have a ‘study partner’- a family member, friend, or caregiver- who would be willing to answer questions about you
You either
Have mild cognitive impairment or early stage Alzheimer’s; or
Have depression without Alzheimer’s
You may not be eligible for this study if
You cannot have an MRI, for example because of metal in your body
You have neurological, or psychiatric disorder, including fluid buildup in the brain, brain tumor, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, motor neuron disease, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder
