Memory and Aging Project

Updated on 25 February 2022
Accepts healthy volunteers

This study is looking for two groups of healthy people over 65: those who have memory loss and those who are cognitively normal. The study will collect data every year to learn about the aging process.

Study schedule:
Over several study visits, participants will complete all of the following:
-Have a medical exam (2.5 hours).
-Do cognitive testing (2 hours).
-Give a blood sample.
-Give a spinal fluid sample.
-Have brain scans (1 hour, each; described below).
Study activities will be repeated yearly. This study is longitudinal (continuing over time).

Study activities may include:
-Having a medical exam. It will be focused on memory and physical health concerns.
-Doing cognitive testing, which may be in the form of interview-style conversations, paper-and-pencil questionnaires, computer tests, and/or other activities.
-Having a sample of blood taken from your arm vein, using a needle.
-Having a sample of spinal fluid drawn from your lower back (spine), using a needle. This is also known as a lumbar puncture or a spinal tap.
-Having brain scans (described below).
-Having an injection as a standard part of the brain scan procedure.

Treatment or experiment details:
-One of the brain scans is an MRI. For this, you will lie inside the scanning machine for about an hour while it takes a 3D image of your brain.
-The other brain scan is a PET scan. For this, you will have an injection in your arm vein and then lie inside the scanning machine for about an hour while it takes a 3D image of your brain.
-There is no treatment or experiment being tested in this study. It is intended to learn about the aging process. This may be used to develop better ways to diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s.

Additional details:
-Some participants may be offered participation in other study activities, such as sleep assessments. These activities are optional.
