Summary

This study is looking for African-American families that have been affected by Alzheimer’s. The study wants to learn about the genetic causes of Alzheimer’s.

Description

Study schedule:
-You will have a medical examination.
-You will complete memory, cognitive, and language assessments.
-You will have interviews about daily activities, changes in behavior, and medical history.
-Some of the study activities will be done in person. They will be scheduled at your convenience and can take place at your home or another location of your choosing. Visits will take 1-2 hours.
-Other activities (such as the interviews) can be done over the phone.

Study activities may include:
-Having a medical examination.
-Having memory, cognitive, and language assessments, which may be in the form of interview-style conversations, paper-and-pencil questionnaires, computer tests, and/or other activities.
-Having interviews about daily activities, changes in behavior, and medical history.

Treatment or experiment details:
-There is no treatment or experiment being tested in this study.
-The study is interested in the discovery of genetic causes of Alzheimer’s among African Americans, in order to help develop new medications.

Additional details:
-There is no need for participants to travel for this study.

Inclusion Criteria

You could be eligible for this study if
Your family is of African-American descent
Multiple family members are willing to participate together
There must be at least three family members who have Alzheimer’s or another kind of dementia&semi
There must be at least one family member over the age of 70 who does not have Alzheimer’s
You may not be eligible for this study if
Your family does not meet all eligibility criteria, based on screening questions
