Summary

Volunteers needed for a Celiac medical research study

Description

Celiac disease is an inherited, life-long digestive disease affecting children and adults. When people with celiac disease eat certain foods, there is a reaction that damages their small intestine and can interfere with the ability of their intestine to take in nutrients from food. This reaction occurs when they eat gluten, which is a plant protein found in foods like wheat, rye and barley and in many everyday products like some medicines and vitamins. There is currently no drug treatment or cure for celiac disease. The only available option for people with this disease is to follow a strict gluten-free diet.

Coastal Carolina Research Center and Dr. Cynthia Strout are currently seeking volunteers for a celiac disease research study. The purpose of this study is to find out if the investigational medication versus placebo is able to improve the damage in the lining of the intestine caused by gluten that often contaminates an attempted gluten-free diet. The study will also evaluate whether this medication versus placebo has an effect on any of the symptoms related to celiac disease and to collect further information on any side effects. If you are eligible and decide to volunteer you can expect 7 office visits over approximately 28 weeks.

All research study-related care is provided to qualified participants at no cost including:

  • Investigational medication or placebo
  • Physical exam
  • Lab work and urine pregnancy test
  • Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and duodenal biopsy

Monetary compensation is available for those who volunteer and qualify. No health insurance is required.
