Type 2 diabetes study seeks participants 10 – 25 years old.

Detailed Study Description

Dr. Paula Newton is conducting a study to determine whether a short period of exercise will lower blood sugars in teenagers and young adults with type 2 diabetes. This study includes 4 outpatient study visits over about 2 weeks. Two of the visits will take about an hour and two will take about 7 hours. Participation includes glucose monitoring and riding a stationary bike. There will also be an IV placed to take labs. This study might help other people with diabetes in the future. Participants may benefit from knowledge of their blood sugar trends during and after exercise. Risks will be discussed as part of the informed consent process. Up to $100 in gift cards is provided for time and effort.

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age 10 – 25
  • Type 2 diabetes

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  • Cardiovascular or pulmonary disease that would make exercise unsafe
  • Pregnancy
