Summary

Seeking Oklahomans with a Total Cholesterol greater than 280 and/or an LDL greater than 160.

Description

Having high LDL (or bad) cholesterol is dangerous because it is a risk factor for heart disease, which is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Having an HDL (good cholesterol) of 60 or greater can decrease the levels of LDL.

Cholesterol is found only in foods from animals such as beef, dairy, poultry and seafood. It is most important to limit intake of saturated fatty acids, which are the primary contributor to high cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends that the daily dietary cholesterol intake should be less than 300 milligrams per day. The average American man consumes about 337 milligrams of cholesterol a day, the average woman 217 milligrams.
