The main goal of this study is to describe and document the link between acne bumps and acne scars. The study also aims to evaluate the effect of Epiduo gel compared to placebo on the prevention of acne scars and the treatment of pre-existing acne scars.
Study design: Exploratory, international, multi-centre, randomized, investigator blinded, vehicle controlled study using intra-individual comparison (right half-face versus left half-face) Primary objective: Describe and document the relationship between the primary and secondary acne lesions. Secondary objective: Evaluate the effect of Epiduo® gel compared to its vehicle on the prevention of acne scars and the treatment of pre-existing acne scars. Study intervention: Epiduo® gel is a combination of Adapalene 0.1% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%. Adapalene is a vitamin A derivative believed to normalize skin cells formation which results in decreased plugged pores that can cause acne. Recent studies also suggest that vitamin A derivatives like Adapalene may contribute to collagen generation and improve the appearance of acne scars. Benzoyl peroxide is an agent that dries up the oil produced by the skin that also has antimicrobial properties against the bacteria responsible for acne lesions. Thus, the combined use of Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide has complementary actions that target acne lesions.
