ALA Launches Campaign to Increase Black Participation in Lung Cancer Trials
The American Lung Association (ALA) has launched a campaign aimed at improving diversity in lung cancer research, citing the reduced chances Black lung cancer patients will be diagnosed early, receive surgical treatment or receive any treatment compared to White patients.
The campaign, an expansion of the association’s Awareness, Trust and Action program launched last year, looks to address major barriers to trial participation among Black lung cancer patients by increasing awareness about trials as a treatment option, addressing misconceptions and mistrust, and pushing for conversations between doctors and Black patients.
The ALA has released a number of resources, including YouTube videos by a research advocate, a bishop, a pastor, a lung cancer survivor and a lung cancer trial participant, as well as a guide for developing diverse health promotion materials.
The program is being supported by sponsors Daiichi Sankyo, Genentech, Merck, Novartis and Novocure.
