MAGI East 2023 Preview: Janssen Reports on Environmental Impact of Trials

The carbon footprint of clinical research is an important metric for sites and sponsors to understand, say two Janssen directors who will present new data on trial sustainability at the 2023 MAGI East Clinical Research Conference next week.
Jason LaRoche, director of Janssen’s clinical innovation team, and Jeff Cohen, associate director of Janssen’s digital health operations, will share an overview of the changing market landscape, data on Janssen’s carbon footprint and opportunities to dampen environmental impact.
Attendees will learn, for instance, how a phase 1 Janssen trial that randomized 28 participants and involved one week of in-patient care/three weeks of at-home administration had a carbon footprint equivalent to an average car driving 42,739 miles, or around the Earth 1.7 times.
They’ll also outline sustainability strategies for measuring environmental impact across a trial’s duration as well as by trial activity.
In addition to discussing easy ways to improve trial sustainability, LaRoche and Cohen will discuss collaborative efforts to address this important issue and take questions from the audience.
