Smaller EMR Companies Could Push Integration

October 17, 2006

The use of electronic medical records (EMR) technology to enhance the conduct and efficiency of clinical trials has been highly touted of late. The ability to utilize hospital medical records in patient recruitment is seen as a promising solution to costly subject recruitment delays. Companies operating in the EMR space are looking for ways to integrate their systems to work togther with established eClinical infrasture. Aside from a few of the global IT giants such as Siemen AG and Oracle Clinical, GE Healthcare and McKesson, some of the smaller players in EMR may be the ones to watch out for. Being smart, quick and nimble has a big advantage in the IT idustry.

Recently, Girish Kumar Navani, president and co-founder of eClinicalWorks, a Westborough, Mass. electronic medical records (EMRs) company was honored with an achievement award by the Boston Business Journal. CenterWatch caught up with Navani during the event. “We knew we would be successful, but did not imagine to this extent. I attribute this to us consistently working together towards a common goal. Being recognized by the Boston Business Journal is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team,” said Girish Kumar Navani, president of eClinicalWorks. eClinicalWorks was founded in 1999 and specializes in providing services EMR services to the ambulatory healthcare community.

The 9th annual 40 under 40 Awards were held on Oct. 5th in Boston, Mass and highlighted 40 local business professionals, under the age of 40, who have shown outstanding leadership and charitable works.

An article in the August 2006 issue of CenterWatch Monthly: "Integrating EDC with EHR?" by Karyn Korieth, explored how vendors are offering more integrated enterprise-wide systems with features such as clinical data management, project management and interactive voice response systems.

" Beyond integration is the promise—and threat—of integrating EDC with electronic health record systems. Given the long struggle to move EDC out of the pilot phases, will that ultimate integration come soon? Your answer may depend on whether you are an EDC or EHR vendor."
