Trial Information

Summary: Prospective Study of Risk-Reducing Salpingo-Ophorectomy and Longitudinal CA-125 Screening Among Women at Increased Genetic Risk of Ovarian Cancer [GOG 0199]

This research study is for women who are at an increased genetic risk of getting ovarian cancer. The purpose of this study is to learn more about how to care for women who are at increased genetic risk of ovarian cancer.

At the present time, medical options used by women at increased risk of ovarian cancer include preventive removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes (Risk-Reducing Salpingo-Oophorectomy, RRSO), tubal ligation (“tying the tubes”), the use of oral contraceptive (birth control) pills, or regular check-ups aimed at finding ovarian cancer sooner than usual (screening).

You can choose to join one of two groups in the study. The first group is women who choose to undergo RRSO. The second group is women who choose not to have surgery.

Special note: Women who choose to have ovarian cancer screening at the time they enter the study are permitted to change their minds at a later date and have RRSO.
