Summary: Heart Disease Clinical Research Study

The latest in heart disease research

We all know that high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart attacks or strokes, and that statin medications can help lower high cholesterol. Doctors and scientists know now that inflammation in the body can also increase heart disease risk. A naturally occurring enzyme, called Lp-PLA2, is an inflammatory marker that may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes if elevated.

If you know you are at risk for heart disease, you may qualify for a clinical research study now underway at Diablo Clinical Research focusing on the inflammatory enzyme Lp-PLA2. This study involves an investigational medication in combination with an approved cholesterol medication to determine its effects on both Lp-PLA2 and cholesterol levels, and to determine if it can reduce future heart disease risk.

You may qualify if you have high cholesterol and are at risk because of heart disease. Even if you’re already taking cholesterol medication, you still may qualify.

You may qualify for this study if you have:

  • High cholesterol and
  • Are at high risk because of heart disease:
    • coronary heart disease
    • coronary angiography
    • prior coronary artery bypass surgery
    • prior heart attack
    • carotid artery disease
    • peripheral arterial disease
    • diabetes
    • or other risk factors for heart disease indicating high risk for future coronary events

All participants will receive at no charge all study-related:

  • Study medication including approved medication to lower cholesterol
  • Diet and exercise advice
  • Medical care

Study stipend is also included for enrolled participants.
