Trial Information

Summary: SWOG S0226: Phase III Randomized Trial of Anastrozole Versus Anastrozole and Fulvestrant as First Line Therapy for Post Menopausal Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have breast cancer that has spread to other parts of your body (metastasized). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and side effects of the combination of the hormonal agents, anastrozole and fulvestrant, as compared to anastrozole alone as a treatment for metastatic breast cancer. As part of this study, the researchers would also like to do laboratory testing on tissue samples and blood samples to find out as much as possible about breast cancer and how this treatment might affect the disease. They would also like to use the tissue and blood to find out about other cancers or other diseases. Your treatment on this study is expected to last at least three months but may continue for as long as your tumor is not growing and you are not having any unmanageable side effects. After you complete treatment, your medical condition will be followed for a total of 5 years from the time you started treatment.
