Trial Information

Summary: CALGB 80101: Phase III Intergroup Trial of Adjuvant Chemoradiation After Resection of Gastric or Gastroesophageal Adenocarcinoma

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have cancer of the stomach or of the lower esophagus/stomach area. The purpose of this study is to determine which of the following combinations of chemotherapy and radiation are more effective in preventing the return of stomach cancer and improve survival: Group 1, the chemotherapy drugs 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (LV) plus radiation therapy; or Group 2, the chemotherapy drugs epirubicin, cisplatin, and 5-FU (a combination called ECF) followed by a continuous infusion of 5-FU plus radiation therapy. Another purpose is to do laboratory studies to see whether differences in the tumor or in the blood are related to differences in treatment-related side effects and overall survival. Another purpose is to see whether the number of surgical procedures performed in a hospital has an effect on survival. Your treatment on this study is expected to last approximately 20 weeks. After all of the chemotherapy and radiation therapy have been completed, we will ask you to return for physical examinations and blood tests every 3 months for 2 years; then every 4 months for 2 years, then yearly for 3 years (7 years total) to see how you are doing and whether the cancer has come back.
