Trial Information
Summary: Neoadjuvant/Adjuvant Docetaxel and Estramustine in Combination with Brachytherapy and Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy
Standard treatment for prostate cancer includes radiation
therapy and hormone therapy. Radiation therapy uses high energy
x-rays to damage the cancer cells. Hormone therapy may fight
prostate cancer by reducing the production of androgens(male
hormones that make prostate tissue grow). Chemotherapy uses
different medicines to stop cancer cells from dividing and growing.
It is not yet known whether adding chemotherapy to hormone therapy
plus radiation therapy is better than hormone therapy plus
radiation therapy alone. This research study is designed to see if
there is any advantage to adding chemotherapy before and after
radiation therapy plus hormone therapy to treat prostate
cancer.
No Compensation Provided
Patient Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:
1. Have not received any type of treatment for prostate cancer
before starting this research study.
2. Diagnosed with high risk(more likely to return after local
therapy) prostate cancer by transrectal ultrasound biopsy.
High risk features include:
a) Pathology Report lists Gleason Score of 8-10(Gleason score is a
number the pathologist assigns based on how aggressive it looks
under the microscope, scale is 0-10. Low numbers mean cancer cells
look and act more like normal prostate cells and higher numbers
mean cancer cells look and act very different from normal
cells.)
b) Pathology Report lists Gleason score of 7, eligible only if
seminal vesicle involved with prostate cancer confirmed by
transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy.
3. Must be able to walk, take care of self and spend half of waking
hours out of bed.
1.Treatment of any type for prostate cancer before starting on
this research study
2.Gleason score on Pathology report less than or equal to 7 without
prostate cancer involvement of the seminal vesicles.
3. Prostate cancer which has spread outside the prostate gland
detected by x-ray, CT scan or magnetic resonance imaging.
4. Previous history of radiation therapy to the pelvis area.
