Summary: Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene for the Prevention of Breast Cancer (STAR)
The Queens Cancer Center of Queens Hospital Center in
conjunction with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the NSABP
(National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project) is currently
conducting STAR. Recently, clinical research studies have shown
that Tamoxifen will actually prevent breast cancer in many women.
Raloxifene, a medication similar to Tamoxifen has been studied for
many years and has been approved for osteoporosis prevention, but
it is investigational for use in breast cancer prevention. It's
effectiveness in preventing breast cancer will be compared to
Tamoxifen in the STAR clinical research study.
You will not be compensated for your time, however, research
study medication will be provided at no cost to you.
You may be eligible to participate in the above study if
you:
- Are postmenopausal (have not had your period for 12 consecutive
months)
- Have not been on hormones for at least 3 months
- Are determined to be at risk for breast cancer based on family
and medical histories (determined by STAR risk assessment
form)
You may not participate in the above study if you:
- Have been diagnosed with breast cancer
- Have a history of blood clots, uncontrolled high blood pressure
or diabetes
- Are taking anticoagulants such as Coumadin
