Trial Information
Summary: Nasal Continuous Airway Pressure (nCPAP) Therapy for Sleep Apnea/Hypopnea Syndrome-Adults
People with sleep apnea/Hypopnea syndrome are asked to participate in a research study being conducted by North Shore - LIJ Medical Center.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Are between the ages of 18 and 65
- Have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome
- Are willing to stay at a sleep laboratory for 4 full days
You may not participate in this study if you:
- Have a history of HIV infection, hepatitis, gastric bypass or banding surgery, or cancer
- Have a history of neurological disorders not limited to seizure disorders, epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cognitive impairment, head trauma, heart attack, or classical migraine
- Have a history within the past 6 months of heart disorder
- Have moderate to severe asthma
- Have a history of psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder, bipolar disorder or depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or other anxiety disorder
- Have a history of sleep disorder including narcolepsy, insomnia, shift work sleep disorder, nightmare disorder, sleep walking disorder, or restless leg syndrome
- Have donated blood within 8 weeks
- Have a history of substance abuse including alcohol, hypnotics, and drugs of abuse and have a positive urine drug screen
- Consume more that 600 milligrams of caffeine daily (18 cans of Coca Cola or 5 large cups of coffee).
- Consume more that 10 cigarettes a day or have a history of smoking to stay awake
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or intend to become pregnant during the study
- Have participated in another research study within the last 30 days
