Summary: Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare brain infection caused by the JC virus - Adults

People with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) are asked to participate in a research study being conducted by Mount Sinai Medical Center.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 60
  • Have been diagnosed with PML

You may not participate in this study if you:

  • Have an infection of the Central Nervous System
  • Have any condition which would prevent repeated lumbar punctures
  • Have an active severe mental illness (e.g., depression, anxiety, psychosis, and schizophrenia)
  • Have active epilepsy
  • Have liver or kidney failure
  • Have been treated with quinine, quinidine, chloroquine, or halofantrine
  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or intend to become pregnant during the study
  • Have participated in another research study within the last 30 days
