Trial Information
Summary: Migraine Headache Trial Now Accepting Volunteers
Physicians at the University of Kentucky Gill Heart Institute and the Kentucky Clinic Department of Neurology are now participating in a national research study to determine if Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) closure using the AMPLATZER device can prevent migraine headaches compared to standard medical therapy.
You may be eligible for this research study if you:
- are an adult between 18 and 55 years of age
- have severe migraine headaches
- tried or failed certain migraine medications.
Qualified volunteers will receive:
- free evaluation by a migraine neurologist
- free screening for Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
- opportunity for PFO closure at no cost
- reimbursement for mileage if you live greater than 50 miles away
(50.5 cents/mile).
The research study will require a minimum of eleven clinic visits during the first year and then one clinic visit a year for a minimum of five years. Screening visits may take up to 3 hours and follow-up visits may take 30 minutes to an hour of your time, as you are required to attend visits once per month for the first year. If you are randomized for the PFO closure, you will be required to stay in the hospital for approximately 24 hours.
