Trial Information

Summary: Individuals with heart failure who live in a rural setting wanted for walking study.

UVa Health System, Rural Health Care Research Center, School of Nursing seeks individuals ages 18 and older with heart failure for research study.

The purpose of the study is to find out if patients with heart failure can improve their physical activity level and overall well-being with a pedometer home walking program. (A pedometer is a small device that is worn to measure the number of steps you take.) Individuals will be selected to be in one of two groups: Group 1 will receive standard teaching for heart failure patients; Group 2 will receive standard teaching, a pedometer, and a log for recording the number of steps taken each day for 3 months. The study involves a six-minute walk test, a blood pressure study of blood flow, and short questionnaires at hospital discharge and at 3 months, each session lasting 1-2 hours.

Compensation for study completion is $25.00. All participants will receive: a phone card for questions, a gas card for returning for the 3 month visit, and a pedometer and instruction booklet.
