Trial Information

Summary: SWOG S0500: A Randomized Phase III Trial to Test the Strategy of Changing Therapy versus Maintaining Therapy for Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients Who Have Elevated Circulating Tumor Cell Levels at First Follow-Up Assessment

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have metastatic (cancer that has spread to other parts of your body) breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to evaluate overall survival when treatment for metastatic breast cancer is switched to an alternative chemotherapy based on the results of the CellSearch blood test (which identifies tumor cells in the blood) compared to when treatment is switched based on signs of progressive disease.  In addition, this study will be used to further confirm results of the prior study, which showed that subjects with less than 5 CTS (circulating tumor cells) per 7.5 ml. (about 1 ½ teaspoon) of blood live longer than those with greater than 5 CTCs per 7.5 ml. of blood.  Your participation in this study will involve collecting blood samples periodically until your disease worsens.  After the researchers stop collecting your blood samples, they would like to follow your medical condition indefinitely.
