Summary: BMT CTN #0501: Multi-Center, Open Label, Randomized Trial Comparing Single Versus Double Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation in Pediatric Patients with High Risk Leukemia and Myelodysplasia

You have/your child has been asked to participate in this research study because you are/your child is 2-21 years old, have/has leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) that has failed or is not likely to respond to other treatment, and suitable umbilical cord blood units are available for transplant.  The purpose of this study is to compare the use of two units of cord blood to one cord blood unit in terms of survival, relapse (return of disease), and side effects.  Your/your child’s participation in this study is expected to last about 2 months for treatment and about two years for follow-up.  Your/your child’s medical condition will be followed indefinitely.
