Summary: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) - Adults

People with COPD are asked to participate in a research study being conducted by North Shore University Hospital.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Are 40 years of age or older
  • Have been diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Are a current or ex-smoker
  • Are able to inhale medication from an inhaler

You may not participate in this study if you:

  • Have a recent history (one year or less) heart attack or other heart related failure within the past 3 years
  • Have undergone resection, radiation therapy or chemotherapy within the last 5 years due to malignancies
  • Have narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Have asthma or a history of asthma
  • Have a history of life-threatening pulmonary obstruction, or a history of cystic fibrosis or clinically evident bronchiectasis
  • Have tuberculosis
  • Have a history of and/or active significant alcohol or drug abuse
  • Have completed a pulmonary rehabilitation program in 6 weeks
  • Have taken SpirivaŽ within 30 days
  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or intend to become pregnant during the study
  • Have participated in another research study within the last 30 days
