Springfield Clinic is a multi-specialty private practice limited partnership clinic servicing a large area of central Illinois. There are over 170 physicians serving as a referral source for investigational trials. Springfield Clinic research activities are provided oversight by a group of peer investigators who assure compliance with good clinical practice guidelines, compliance with applicable federal laws and review investigator training.

Clinical Research Experience
Springfield Clinic has interest in conducting trials in the areas of rheumatoid arthritis, osteo-arthritis, osteoporosis, lupus, infectious diseases, oncology, cardiology, neurology, urology, endocrinology, hepatitis C, skin disorders, multiple sclerosis, women’s health issues, erectile dysfunction, post-operative nausea, post-operative pain management, sepsis syndrome, macular degeneration, cataracts, and occupational health issues. New investigative areas are continually being added.

We have been the lead enrolling site in three multi-center trials in the area of Skin Infections and Sepsis. We have conducted trials in the areas of Atypical pneumonia, community acquired pneumonia, hospital acquired pneumonia, Intra-abdominal infections, Invasive Aspergillosis and candidiasis, osteomyelitis, shingles, febrile neutropenia, Hanta virus, complications of home infusion, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, overactive bladder, erectile dysfunction, actinic keratosis, acute coronary syndrome, multiple sclerosis, chemo therapy induced anemia, metastatic breast cancer, diabetes, diabetic macular edema, HIV and Hepatitis C. We are familiar with multiple formats of electronic data capture as well as web-based training.

Facility Description
Our center has experience in both inpatient and outpatient trials. The main clinic is located one mile from St. John’s Hospital which has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the 50 best cancer hospitals in the nation. Springfield Clinic is accredited by AAAHC receiving the highest marks and maximum accreditation term allowed by that organization. The laboratory at Springfield Clinic is CAP and CLIA certified and full radiology service including CAT scan and MRI are available.
The Clinic has a dedicated research staff of 8 full time nursing professionals and full time document support staff that manage the day-to-day correspondence activities and other study regulatory requirements. The department also includes a Research Director who oversees the clinical activities as well as seeking new projects. The facility has conference rooms that are reserved for monitoring activities with telephone and Internet access. A copy and fax machine are also available for monitoring activities.

Edward L. Braud, M.D.

Dr Braud has been involved in clinical research since 1980. He has held the position of Associate Principle Investigator for the Central Illinois CCOP since 1987. He is listed as local PI on over 250 treatment and cancer control trials. Although his special interest is in bladder and prostate cancer, he has been involved with phase 2 and 3 trials for all types of cancers including hematologic neoplasms. He is a member of SWOG, ECOG, and NSABP. He is active in oncology affairs in both ASCO and ACCC.
Mary E. Bretscher, M.D.

Clinical trial experience since 1993. Areas of interest include general oncology and palliative medicine.
David G. Dodwell, M. D.
Ophthalmology Certified
Clinical Trial Experience in devise and new drug development since 2002. Interested in diseases and treatments for retinal disorders of the eye. He specializes in disease and surgery of the retina and vitreous/laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy/macular degeneration. He was the first surgeon in central Illinois to perform laser treatment for premature eye diseases (retinopathy of prematurity), vitrectomy surgery for macular hole (a form of macular degeneration) and outpatient "no-stitch" retinal detachment surgery (pneumoretinopexy).

Interested in Home Care complications (nosohusial infections), Sepsis Syndrome, Resistant Organisms, Fungal Infections, Catheter-related Infections, hepatitis C, Community Acquired and Nosocomial Pneumonia, Skin and Skin Structure Infections, Diabetic Foot Infections, Intra-abdominal Infections, C. difficile colitis, Osteomyelitis and prevention of Nosocomial Infections.
Shaun Hill, O.D.
Optometry
Interested in full scope optometric eye care with a special interest in family eye care including contact lenses, low vision services and sports vision. Dr. Hill holds an Illinois State License in both Optometry and Diagnostic/Therapeutic Optometric Pharmacology. He has received Visual Acuity Certification from Touchtone as well as ETDRS certification. He provides visual acuity and refraction examinations for all ophthalmologic clinical trials.

Clinical trial experience in Actinic Keratosis. Provides comprehensive care of the skin for adults and children. Has a phototherapy unit (UVB/UVA) and an outpatient surgical suite. Performs procedures such as sclerotherapy, laser, Botox injections, and dermal fillers. Works in conjunction with a physician assistant who has expertise in treating common skin conditions such as acne and warts.

Interested as well as Multiple Myeloma and other hematologic abnormalities. Solid tumor interests include Small Cell and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Colon Cancer and other solid organ tumor diagnosis and treatments. Also with an interest in pain management, chemotherapy-induced toxicities and complications, neutropenia, and anemias both of chronic disease as well as chemotherapy or disease induced. Other disease or therapeutic manifestations / toxicities or innovative treatment or diagnostic approaches for the hematology / oncology patient would be of interest.
Donald L. Yakel, Jr., M.D.,
Internal Medicine and Cardiology Certified
Clinical Trial Experience in device and drug development since 1998. Interested in cardiac stent technology, anticoagulation therapies, hyperlipidemia, C-reactive Protein analysis and hypertension therapies.

Patient population is familiar with new therapies and eager to embrace new treatment options. Springfield Clinic has been providing care to Central Illinois since 1939 and has an excellent reputation in the area for providing quality health care.

Other Information
Local Commercial IRB provides 10-14 day turnaround from protocol submission to approval. Local IRB (50 mile radius) is required for all in patient protocols. Out patient protocols can utilize the services of a central IRB.
