
Center Overview
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is a major academic health science center dedicated to education, patient care, research and community service. UTMB is a health care system comprising 6 hospitals, 101 campus-based clinics and 37 community-based clinics that serve the needs of patients from 223 counties. UTMB is also affiliated with a Shriners Burns Hospital. The Office of Clinical Trials is an institutionally focused program working across all departments; administrative and clinical. Components of the program include business development, administration, and operations. Services provided under each component include:

Clinical Research Experience
As Texas’s first and oldest medical school, UTMB’s has been involved in clinical research for many years. Research studies have been conducted with many sponsors in the following areas:
Anesthesiology / Pain Management; Burns / Wound healing; Cardiology / Vascular diseases; Dermatology; Endocrinology; Exercise & metabolism; Gastroenterology; Geriatrics; Hematology; Hyperbaric medicine; Immunology / Infectious Disease; Nephrology; Neurology; Nutrition; Obstetrics / Gynecology; Oncology; Ophthalmology; Pediatrics / Neonatology; Psychiatry; Pulmonary / Respiratory diseases; Radiological sciences; Rheumatology; Sleep disorders; Surgery (includes orthopedic & transplant); and Urology.
UTMB participates in Phase I, II, III, IV trials, outcomes and epidemiological studies and complementary / alternative medicine research.

Facility Description
UTMB occupies 84 acres and 54 major buildings on its main campus, and has numerous community-based clinics located throughout southeast Texas. Throughout these buildings can be found state-of-the-art equipment for the performance of inpatient or outpatient studies regardless of complexity.
UTMB is also home to a General Clinical Research Center, an NIH funded AIDS Clinical Trial Unit, Asthma & Allergic Diseases Research Center, and Environmental Health Sciences Center. Additionally, UTMB is a WHO Collaborating Center for Tropical Medicine, a WHO Collaborating Center for International Health and a WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing/Midwifery Development in Primary Care.

Investigator Experience
The UTMB’s School of Medicine includes experienced investigators in all the areas listed above. The investigators collaborate across departments and institutions for the promotion of research.

Staff Expertise
The staff within the Office of Clinical Trials has many years experience in both administrative and operational aspects of clinical research. These include negotiation of agreements, study coordination (from start-up through close-out), budgeting and business development.

Patient Demographics
The UTMB catchment area enables it to draw a large, diverse patient population. This diversity applies to ethnicity, age and disease states. Special populations serviced by UTMB include women, children, seniors, the indigent and the incarcerated.

Other Information
All UTMB conducted protocols must be reviewed by UTMB’s IRB. The UTMB IRB meets twice a month with meetings taking place on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month.
