The Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. It is the world's largest biomedical research hospital and ambulatory care facility.

About 7,000 patients are admitted each year to the Clinical Center’s 350-bed hospital. Another 68,000 outpatients visit the 13-story ambulatory care facility. The Clinical Center, which houses more than 1,600 laboratories conducting basic and clinical research, offers some of most advanced scientific and medical technology.

About the Research:

The National Institutes of Health was established by Congress to study the basic causes of diseases and to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness.

There are currently more than 1,000 active clinical studies being carried out at the NIH Clinical Center, including studies in cancer; eye disorders; heart, lung, and blood disorders; allergy and infectious diseases; mental illness; arthritis, musculoskeletal, and skin diseases; and deafness.

How to Become a Patient:

To take part at the Clinical Center, referral by a medical practitioner is preferable. However, in certain instances, self-referral may be appropriate. For more information, please contact the Patient Recruitment and Referral Center.

How to Refer a Patient:

Patients should make preliminary inquiries by telephone, electronic mail or database query to determine if the patient's diagnosis may be of interest to investigators. If the patient's disease is under active investigation, physicians may be asked to submit the diagnosis and medical history in writing to the principal investigator.
