Center Overview

Founded in 1996, Coordinated Clinical Research (CCR) is a subsidiary of the Center for Neurologic Study (CNS). CNS has been a leader in Neurological research since 1979 and has collaborated with pharmaceutical and biotech companies for years to develop cutting edge therapies for neurological disorders. In addition to providing information and experimental treatment to patients and families affected by neurological diseases with no known cure, CNS has been awarded multiple patents for its development of drug combinations for the treatment of emotionality and chronic pain.

Coordinated Clinical Research is committed to continuing this tradition of outstanding research and patient care. Our research center is located in La Jolla, CA on the Scripps Memorial Hospital Campus. Each of our six neurologists have different specialties and backgrounds. All are board certified neurologists and not only perform research, but also function in private practice keeping them in touch with their patients needs. Jonathan M. Licht, M.D., a board certified neurologist since 1987, is the Director of Research for Coordinated Clinical Research. Dr. Licht has over 15 years of neurological research and clinical trials experience and has been the principal investigator in both research and development studies. In addition to his research Dr. Licht also serves as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at UCSD, Clinical Instructor at Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Dr. Licht has also been a board certified Electro-Physiologist since 1989 and specializes in Nerve Conduction testing.

Richard A. Smith, M.D.
Richard A. Smith, M.D. is the medical director and founder of the Center for Neurologic Study and is also one of the founders of Coordinated Clinical Research. Since completing his neurology residency at Stanford University, Dr. Smith has been involved in both laboratory and clinical research resulting in publication in numerous medical and scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Neurology, Annals of Neurology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and many others. Dr Smith has edited two books, the first dealing with Interferon and the second with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. In addition to his many publications, Dr Smith has been issued numerous US patents based on discoveries made at CNS by Dr. Smith and his colleagues. These have resulted in the creation of Neurodex which is under development by Avanir Pharmaceutical Corporation. Currently Dr Smith is a Skaggs Clinical Scholar (Scripps Research Institute) and a Visiting Scholar at the University of California. His recent research focuses on the development of novel therapies directed toward the treatment of ALS and Huntington’s disease.

Edward B. Friedman, M.D.
Edward B. Friedman, M.D., a board certified neurologist, has been a co-investigator at CCR since 2004 and has a clinical practice in Chula Vista, CA.
