Center Overview

Established in 1879, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is Arkansas’ only comprehensive academic health sciences center. Situated on 35 acres, UAMS’ central campus is comprised of five colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Related Professions, and Public Health), a Graduate School, a 359-bed University Hospital, with an adjoining outpatient center, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Research Center, the Jones Eye Institute, the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, Biomedical Research Centers, and the Barton Institute for Medical Research. There are more than 690 physicians on the medical staff as well as 602 fellows and residents. University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences faculty physicians care for patients with a diversity of medical conditions. During FY2008 more than 16,467 adults were admitted to University Hospital.

Clinical Research Experience

Faculty of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System have conducted Phase I, II, IIa/b, IIIb and IV studies in numerous clinical areas for over 50 years. Therapeutic specialties include:

Facility Description

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), established in 1879 in Little Rock, is Arkansas’ only comprehensive, academic health sciences center. It comprises five colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Related Professions, and Public health), a Graduate School, a 359-bed University Hospital, with an adjoining outpatient center, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Research Center, the Jones Eye Institute, the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, Biomedical Research Centers, and the Barton Institute for Medical Research. UAMS physicians also staff the Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. UAMS’ outreach in the state is a major part of the University’s mission and includes seven Area Health Education Centers located throughout the state and four satellite Geriatric Centers, developed under the supervision of the Reynolds Center on Aging, with plans for a total of seven.

Research is a significant focus at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The UAMS Office for Clinical Trials (OCT) provides a focal point for research partnerships with the pharmaceutical industry. The OCT offers industry sponsors the specialized services of a Central Clinical Trials Office with experienced, certified, full-time, research coordinators. Investigators are required to use the UAMS IRB. Average approval time is less than 45 days.
