Center Overview

Analgesic Development Ltd. founded by Dr. Abraham Sunshine in 1991, is an independently owned clinical research organization dedicated to analgesic drug research and development. Analgesic Development Ltd. has substantial expertise and experience in analgesic drug development. We have extensive experience in clinical project management and maintain highly trained personnel in our clinical research center for conducting analgesic trials in a variety of pain models, as well as, trials in other therapeutic areas.

In addition to analgesia, our therapeutic specialties include:

Analgesic Development Ltd. conducts Phase II, III, and IV trials, as well as post-marketing evaluations. Over the years, the excellence and quality of our research has resulted in numerous pivotal studies contributing to the approval of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics such as Indocin®, Nalfon®, Motrin®, Advil®, Ansaid®, Orudis®, Actron®, Ultram®, OxyContin®, Suprol®, Vicoprofen®, Voltaren®, Zomax®, and Duract®.

Clinical Research Experience

The medical and professional staff of Analgesic Development Ltd. has been involved in clinical research for over 25 years. Our expertise is in conducting well-designed, highly sensitive clinical trials to assess the analgesic efficacy of OTC and prescription drugs. The proven methods of our trained study coordinators for both single and multiple dose trials consistently show separation from placebo, as well as dose response separation in a range of analgesic pain models. Over the years, we conducted many successful inpatient studies in affiliated hospital centers, as well as outpatient studies in ambulatory patients specially trained by our study coordinators, in assessing subjective endpoints. More recently, we have expanded our clinical research to therapeutic areas including hypertension, migraine and tension headaches, osteoarthritis, hyperlipidemia, diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia and chronic back pain.

Our outpatient models include:

  • Headache pain; comprising of tension-type headaches (both acute episode and chronic) and migraine headaches with or without aura;
  • Acute and chronic osteoarthritis pain of the knee, hip and other joints
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidemia
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic back pain
  • Chronic pain (of non-malignant origin)

Facility Description

Analgesic Development Ltd. is located in midtown Manhattan. Our office has been successful, as a centralized point of contact for industry, where one contact accommodates all the study needs from start to completion. Our NYC facility is available for outpatient studies (i.e. tension and migraine headaches and acute and chronic OA pain of the knee and hip, hypertension, lipidemia, diabetic neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia and chronic back pain).

Investigator Experience

Nancy Z. Olson, M.P.S. CCRC, CCRA Research Director and Co-founder of Analgesic Development Ltd. Ms. Olson holds a Master’s degree in Health Care Administration and is a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator as well as a Certified Clinical Research Associate. She has five years experience in cancer research and over twenty-five years experience in managing clinical research projects in analgesia as well as other therapeutic specialties. Ms. Olson served as an active member of the Committee on the FDA Guidelines for the Evaluation of Analgesics and worked closely with the Committee in revising the Analgesic Guidelines. Ms. Olson has served as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies in planning, designing and managing clinical trials. Ms. Olson has published extensively in the field of analgesia and analgesic drug research.

Serena A. Mulhern, M.D. is Principal Investigatorand Medical Director of Analgesic Development Ltd., and oversees its clinical trials. Dr. Mulhern has been affiliated with Analgesic Development Ltd. for over ten years and during this period served as a sub-investigator as well as Principal Investigator for our trials. These trials have been in the area of osteoarthritis, migraine, tension headache, hypertension, fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, non-malignant chronic pain as well as neuropathic pain studies. The drugs under study have included NSAIDs, triptans, opioids, COX-2 compounds as well as other novel agents. Dr. Mulhern is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at NYU Medical Center in New York. Dr. Mulhern is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, as well as a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, the New York County Medical Society and the Medical Society of the State of New York.

Other co-investigators consist of physicians who are part-time and collaborate with us on the research projects.

Staff Expertise

Two full time Clinical Research Coordinators supervise and support our clinical trials. The Senior Clinical Research Coordinator is a certified clinical research coordinator and has over 25 years conducting clinical trials. Our clinical research coordinators are fully trained in the “Good Clinical Practice Guidelines.” They are expertly trained and experienced in coordinating clinical trials in the areas of osteoarthritis, migraine, fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy non-malignant chronic pain and chronic low back pain.

In addition we have a support staff of laboratory assistants and clinical assistants, as well as statistical and computer consultants who provide biostatistical and programming expertise as needed.

Patient Demographics

We maintain updated databases on male and female patients with diverse diagnoses who have previously participated in our studies and who have expressed an interested in continuing to participate in clinical trials. This feature allows us to maintain good communications with our patient population and helps assure high patient compliance once they are enrolled in a study. In addition, we actively recruit subjects for our studies through advertisements, the Internet, and “word-of-mouth” referrals.
