Center Overview

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana is an academic health science center that provides services for all Louisiana residents. The Psychopharmacology Research Clinic, Directed by Anita Kablinger, M.D. is in the Department of Psychiatry. The goals of the Psychopharmacology Research Clinic are to provide patients with appropriate and compassionate care and to expand medical knowledge through research both in the lab and in a clinical setting. The blending of these specific goals demonstrates the unique character of an academic health science center.

We are located in Shreveport, Louisiana which is in the northwest corner of Louisiana. Psychopharmacology is well positioned to recruit patients from diverse demographic groups in North Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. LSUHSC-S is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the South. The 436-bed facility is recognized for its commitment to medical research.

Clinical Research Experience

The Psychopharmacology Research Unit has been involved in clinical research for 6 years. We focus on phase III, IIIB/IV clinical trials. Our therapeutic areas of interest are general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia-schizoaffective disorder, and Alzheimer's disease.

Facility Description

The Psychiatry Psychopharmacology Research Clinic is based at the Louisiana State University Medical Center and located in the School of Medicine. We are a self-contained clinic that includes physician and coordinator offices, exam room, dedicated office space for monitoring by CRAs, computer, fax, Xerox and phone resources, and a lab and specimen preparation area. In addition, inpatient research protocols are conducted on the 33-bed psychiatric unit of the hospital. Outpatient studies are conducted at our site but we also have a Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic from which we are able to recruit patients. We are also adjacent to the Biomedical Research Institute, a two-story 160,000 square foot facility with 56 state-of-the-art research labs that allows us access to one of only 54 Positron-Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging Centers in the United States. Our clinic is accessible by public transportation. We are conveniently located off Interstate 49, within 15 minutes of the Shreveport Regional Airport, serviced by Delta, American, Northwest, Continental and Allegiant Air.

Investigator Experience

Paul Ware, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at LSUHSC-S has been in practice for over 35 years. Dr. Ware is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology.

Anita Kablinger, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry has served as Principal Investigator in over 50 clinical trials and Sub-Investigator in 35 in the Department of Psychiatry at LSUHSC-S. While at the University of Florida Dr. Kablinger served as co-investigator of 15 clinical trials. Dr. Kablinger is Board Certified in Psychiatry, is a Certified Physician Investigator and is a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals.

Mary Jo Fitz-Gerald, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry is Board Certified in Psychiatry. Dr. Fitz-Gerald has served as Principal Investigator on 6 clinical trials and Sub-Investigator on more than 80 in the Department of Psychiatry at LSUHSC-S.

Rita Horton, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry is Board Certified in Psychiatry. Dr. Horton has served as the Principal Investigator on one trial and Sub-Investigator on seven in the Department of Psychiatry at LSUHSC-S.

James Patterson, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry is Board Certified in Psychiatry. Dr. Patterson has served as Principal Investigator in 26 clinical trials and as Sub-Investigator on five in the Department of Psychiatry at LSUHSC-S. His interests lie mainly in the realm of using functional brain imaging for detection of pathophysiological disease states including Alzheimer’s disease.

Jasjit Singh, M.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry is Board Certified in Psychiatry. Dr. Singh has served as Sub-Investigator on over 40 trials in the Department of Psychiatry at LSUHSC-S.

Lee Stevens, M.D., Clinical Professor and Director of Psychiatric Inpatient Child and Adolescent Services. Dr. Stevens is Board Certified and specializes in psychiatric disorders of children and adolescents, geriatrics and addiction disorders.
