Center Overview

Emory Surgery Research is located in the Vascular Surgery Clinic at The Emory Clinic, on the third floor of 1365 Clifton Road, Building A. The majority of physicians who practice at Emory University Hospital have their examination rooms, clinical laboratories, and offices here. The Emory Clinic functions as the primary access point to outpatient care in The Emory Clinic University System of Health Care (EUSHC) with 754 Emory faculty physicians participating in this nonprofit group practice.

Because of Emory's large referral base, it has become one of the fastest growing research universities in the country receiving more than $250 million in sponsored research funding during 2000-2001.

Clinical Research Experience

The Emory Clinic has a long history of involvement in both industry and federally funded clinical research programs. The Division of Vascular Surgery is one of the busiest clinical centers in the southeastern United States and has focused on the treatment of the full spectrum of vascular diseases.

Since 1992, Dr. Elliot Chaikof has been the Principal Investigator for numerous drug and device studies. He is the Director of the Emory Wound Healing and Limb Preservation Clinic, a sub-section of Vascular Surgery under the Department of Surgery.

Prior studies have been conducted in the following areas: intermittent claudication, ischemic ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and endoluminal repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms utilizing a variety of products such as: gene therapy, cytokines, growth factors, prostanoids, living skin equivalents and endovascular stents and grafts.

Facility Description

The Emory Clinic is located on the main campus six miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. It is easily reached by car and public transportation (MARTA) and is 17 miles from Hartsfield International Airport. Affiliated institutions include the Emory University Hospital, Egleston Hospital for Children, Crawford Long Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, the Atlanta Veterans Administration Medical Center, and Wesley Woods Geriatric Center. The Emory Cinic accepts patient and physician referrals.

The Emory Surgery Research Clinic, a subsection of Vascular Surgery under the Department of Surgery, is conveniently located on the third floor of The Emory Clinic. Handicap and valet parking access is available. Study volunteers are encouraged to use these services and are provided with vouchers for validation. An accredited Vascular Laboratory is located immediately adjacent to The Surgery Research Clinic and has the capacity to perform a full battery of diagnostic tests for arterial and venous peripheral vascular disease including treadmill testing, pulse volume recording, and Doppler studies. A two chamber hyperbaric oxygen unit is located three miles away at The Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University.

Study candidates should be within reasonable driving distance of Atlanta for studies that require frequent visits.

Investigator Experience

Dr. Elliot Chaikof, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor within the Department of Surgery and Chief of Vascular Surgery, is board certified in General Vascular Surgery. He received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1982; his surgical training was at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School from 1982 to 1985 and 1989 to 1991. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989. His vascular surgery fellowship was at The Emory University School of Medicine from 1991-1992.

Dr. Chaikof's research interests and/or specialties include:

Vascular Diseases: Aortic aneurysmal disease; peripheral vascular disease including arterial and venous insufficiency; atherosclerosis; endovascular devices and techniques including angioplasty, grafting-stents and the restenosis phenomenon

Wound Healing: Ischemic, venous and diabetic extremity ulcers; growth factors; living skin equivalents

Patient Demographics

The Emory University System of Health Care (EUSHC) has established a network of community hospitals and has satellite clinics throughout the greater Atlanta area. Emory clinicians provide the vast majority of patient care in metropolitan Atlanta, with responsibility for 2,780 hospital beds and more than two million inpatient and outpatient visits annually.

Patient referrals come from the Atlanta metropolitan area (est. population 3.25 million), the state of Georgia, the United States, and world wide locations.

Other Information

Four other Emory vascular surgeons are involved with our clinical trial program as sub-investigators: Robert B. Smith, MD; Thomas F. Dodson, MD; Atef A. Salam, MD; and Victor J. Weiss, MD, RVT. Interventional Radiology has also played a complementary role in our trials.
