Center Overview
Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) is one of the ten largest pediatric medical centers in the nation; ACH serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the only medical school in Arkansas. UAMS faculty composes most of the physicians on the ACH campus. ACH created the Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) to provide a research environment on the ACH campus to meet the needs of UAMS faculty. ACHRI's mission is to improve children's health, development and well-being through high quality research.

Clinical Research Experience
For over 20 years, researchers have been conducting clinical trials at ACH. Currently at ACH, 45 physicians are actively conducting clinical trials through ACHRI. ACHRI has pediatric research expertise encompassing the breadth of medical disciplines; General pediatrics, Pharmacology, Infectious Disease, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, Asthma/Allergy, Anesthesiology/Pain Medicine, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Neonatology, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics and Dermatology.

Facility Description
ACHRI stays active conducting Phase I through Phase IV clinical trials. These trials include both inpatient and outpatient projects. Through ACH and ACHRI, these projects access various hospital services (for example, radiology, clinical laboratory and pharmacy) often used in clinical trials. ACHRI also operates a state-of-the-art, 3,600 square-foot Pediatric Clinical Research Unit (PCRU) at ACH. The PCRU's equipment and facilities include the following: 4 Semi-private daybeds, Phlebotomy/triage room, 2 Private examination rooms, Laboratory, Equipment storage room, Staff offices, Wireless internet access, PQCT Bone density Scanner, -20 C freezer and access to -70 C freezer, Refrigerated centrifuge, Ample space for monitor visits and a 375-square-foot research sleep unit that meets the standards for accreditation as a sleep disorders center.

Patient Demographics
ACH has 292 licensed beds, more than 250,000 outpatient visits and 12,000 admissions annually.

Other Information
All studies conducted on the ACH campus must be approved by the UAMS Institutional Review Board (IRB). The UAMS IRB meets four times monthly and accepts electronic submissions.
