Center Overview

In addition to being an educational and research facility, the board certified specialists in the Section of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility provide the highest quality patient care and state-of-the-art technology. The faculty is involved in research activities funded by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Reproduction, the Department of Defense and a number of non-federal granting agencies, including the pharmaceutical industry (phases I-IV).

Clinical Research Experience

The Section of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility has extensive experience in the execution of investigator-initiated and sponsored trials. Presently, the Section is conducting clinical trials in:

  • Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), including the effectiveness of therapies such as ASA, heparin and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG),
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS),
  • Infertility,
  • Menopausal symptoms, including atrophic vaginitis (dryness), hot flushes and hypoactive sexual desire, and
  • Endometriosis.

Facility Description

Clinical Facilities Description
The Section of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility:

  • Is housed in the University of Chicago Lying-in Hospital, a maternity and women’s hospital; and,
  • The Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, a state-of-the-art outpatient care facility.
  • The Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Program has gained national recognition for its academic approach to the evaluation and management of recurrent pregnancy loss, late pregnancy loss, and clotting disorders in reproduction.
Research Facilities Description

Clinical projects are undertaken in two facilities:

  • The Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine,
  • The National Institute of Health General Clinical Research Center.

The administrative facilities are housed in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Investigator Experience

Mary Stephenson, MD, MSc: Professor and Director of the RPL Program
Clinical and research expertise: Recurrent pregnancy loss, evaluation of miscarriages, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, inherited thrombophilias & reproduction, in-vitro fertilization. Dr. Stephenson is the Principal Investigator of a multicentered, randomized trial for patients with recurrent miscarriage.

Anthony Caruso, MD, MPH: Assistant Professor
Clinical and research expertise: Infertility, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, contraceptive concerns. Dr. Caruso has extensive experience developing evidence-based research protocols.

David Cohen, MD: Associate Professor and Section Head
Clinical and research expertise: Reproductive endocrinology, molecular genetics, menopause, in-vitro fertilization, male infertility and endometriosis.

Helen Kim, MD: Assistant Professor
Clinical and research expertise: Reproductive endocrinology, menstrual disorders, hormonal problems, infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome, in-vitro fertilization. Dr. Kim is investigating the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of the mouse gonadotropin releasing hormone gene (GnRH).

Arthur Haney, MD: Professor and Chairman
Clinical and research interests: Endometriosis, infertility, genital tract anomalies, uterine leiomyomata.

Staff Expertise

A highly experienced administrative and research support team pride themselves in their responsiveness to the needs of patients and sponsors. They have years of clinical trials experience with inpatient and outpatient studies. Full-time research staff consists of Patricia A. Schultz, RN, MHA and Barbara Harding-Clay, CCRC.

Patient Demographics

The Section primarily draws patients from Chicagoland and the Midwest. The Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Program is nationally based.

Other Information

The Section’s research group is very skilled in efficient management of the regulatory document process. The University of Chicago’s Institutional Review Board committees meet three times per month. The Grants and Contracts Office works diligently to expedite clinical research applications.
