Oakwood Healthcare System, a comprehensive regional network, services residents over a 500 square mile area, operates 4 hospitals totaling 1300 beds, and 41 primary care/specialty care sites. With more than 9,000 employees and 1,200 physicians Oakwood Healthcare is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the metropolitan Detroit area. The System is a leader in the health field providing services to more than 1.2 million people in 26 southeastern Michigan communities.

OHS recognizes that healthcare organizations are responsible for monitoring all research conducted within their institutions for quality, safety and integrity. OHS is dedicated to making medical research available to its patients by empowering and educating its faculty and staff, thoroughly reviewing prospective research proposals and assuring the rigorous execution of approved research projects.
The Oakwood Clinical Research Center is an umbrella organization that covers 3 primary administrative bodies, namely the Corporate Clinical Trials Office, the Institutional Review Board and Research Advisory Council. These bodies are all closely linked by shared mission, values and goals to protect research participants and to oversee and facilitate clinical research of the highest integrity and clinical validity.

Investigator Experience
Oakwood Healthcare System has been actively involved in conducting clinical research for over 20 years and is proud of our many investigators. Physician investigators are all board certified and dedicated to our research mission. Oakwood Healthcare employs a strong mix of physician, nurse clinicians and PhD researchers who are committed to improving patient outcomes, treatments and discovering new ways to improve health care. Our investigators have been instrumental in winning awards and have been published in multiple journals and textbooks.

Staff Expertise
The staff of our Clinical Research Center has extensive experience in conducting and managing clinical research trials, project management and administrative and regulatory management of clinical trials. Our Corporate Clinical Trials Offices provides sponsors with a direct link to our many investigators. This Office serves as a one-stop shop for would be sponsors.
Steven M. Schwartz, Ph.D. is the Corporate Director for Oakwood Healthcare System Corporate Clinical Trials Office and Research Director for Medical Education. He is also an Adjunct Faculty at the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia, completed his internship at Henry Ford Hospital and completed a fellowship at the University of Michigan where he was retained as faculty before taking his current position with Oakwood Healthcare System. Dr. Schwartz has been academically active in pharmaco-therapeutic studies; device studies, healthcare economics studies as well as maintaining more focused research interests in studying psychological and behavioral risk in patients with chronic medical illness, including cardiac care. He is also an active lecturer and teaches residents, faculty and graduate students in a variety of topics related to evidence-based practice and medical research methodology.

Patient Demographics
Oakwood Healthcare System covers a 500 square mile service area consisting of a diverse population. It provides inpatient hospital services to approximately 59,000 patients per year. And 506, 688 ambulatory site visits were made to our sites. In addition Oakwood has collaborated in research studies with the University of Michigan, the Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University, Henry Ford Medical Center and Beaumont Hospital.
