Center Overview

The Samaritan Center for Medical Research (SCMR), located in Los Gatos, California in the heart of Silicon Valley, was established for the sole purpose of conducting all phases of clinical trials. The Center was established in 2003 by founder and principal investigator, Maia U. Chakerian, M.D. Dr. Chakerian has directed and participated in numerous clinical trials, both as a faculty member of the Pain Center at the University of California San Diego Medical Center, and as a private practitioner specializing in pain medicine in the Bay Area since 1994. The majority of our clinical trials are in the field of pain management, and the subjects are primarily drawn from this busy medical practice. Dr. Chakerian devotes approximately 20% of her time to clinical research, and spends the rest of her time in direct patient care of chronic and cancer pain management.

The community of Silicon Valley is a well-educated citizenship, and is supportive of the concept of clinical trials. Many of our subjects do their own research to find the latest treatments and experimental trials online.

SCMR has established a unique working relationship with Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, CA (a 422-bed acute medical care and skilled nursing facility owned by HCA). The hospital provides beds, medical staff , clinical laboratory services, electrocardiography, pharmacy services and nursing care to the Center on an as-needed basis. In addition, SCMR organizes community and hospital-based physicians into a multi-specialty research network. SCMR's organizational flexibility means that research operations can be scaled efficiently to meet the discrete requirements of each trial, while ensuring strict oversight of the entire clinical trials process, from recruiting to final reporting.
